First day of SuperGirls 2013!

It was no surprise to me that our time together was fun and that everyone got along.
I am proud of the girls in the existing group for welcoming our five new members and the new girls jumped right in with confidence. It was great to see!

So, our current group includes:

Genevieve, Vivienne, Lauren, Sauve, Isabel, Ella, Lily (mentor)

Traci, Mia, Aspen, Anjolina, Nina and Greta (not pictured).

Today was a "get to know you" kind of format. We started by going over the house rules and expectations for the summer. Then they broke up into pairs and interviewed each other. 

Questions including things like favorite food, favorite subject in school, what they wanted to be when they grow up, etc.

We had a variety of answers but if in 15 or so years you are in need of a doctor, a vet, a daycare provider, a teacher, a retail sales girl, a fireman, or a couple of superstars I know who you can call!

After they interviewed each other they introduced one another to the group. We had some nervous girls but they accepted the challenge to get up and talk after Vivienne, new to the group and the youngest, jumped up and said "I'll do it". SuperGirl already!

Next, we headed to the craft table to make journals. We made journals last year and didn't use them so often since the girls took them home so I'm going to keep them and then they can write a little something in the last few minutes before we are done with our day. I told them it's fun to look back and remember what you did or any thoughts you had since we all forget.

We stopped for a snack break and wrote down all of the qualities we believe a SuperGirl should have. All had great suggestions!

Then it was time to hunt for action figures. I hid 16 little men around the yard and they broke up into teams of three and whichever team found the most guys won. 

It turned out to be a tie between two teams and unfortunately one little man wasn't found. I couldn't remember where I hid them all.  Hopefully my boys won't notice!

Next it was time to regroup in the living room. We talked about some ideas for future SuperGirls Fridays. Having a lemonade/bake sale and giving the money to charity was a big hit.

Then they wrote something in their journals if they wanted to.

We all went outside for some ball tossing, chalk drawing and general running around while they waited for rides. It was a great start to our SuperGirl summer.

Welcome to the SuperGirls blog

If this is your first time visiting the SuperGirls blog, let me give you a little background...

I started SuperGirls last summer as a side adventure to being a full time mom to two boys. I really feel a connection with young girls and you wouldn't know it now, but when I was in elementary school I was shy and had very little confidence or bravery to try new things so that was my inspiration for the group.
SuperGirls is a fun way to form some friendships but also to gain some insight into things that really matter. There is a big emphasis on being kind and respectful, appreciating people for exactly who they are, not bullying or gossiping, helping others, being trustworthy and gaining confidence.

My favorite posts are in July so please look at the side there where it says "blog archive" and you can click on 2012 and July (or any other month if you have the time to read it all).

Each day is usually filled with: a craft, team building activity, snack, free time, dance and circle time with our thoughts on what we learned.

I am currently busy thinking up a curriculum for this summer!

Spring Break Fun

A quick blog post about our spring break get together.

Here are a few of the things we did:

decorated Easter eggs
talked about things we'd like to do this summer when we meet on Fridays
ate a snack (Peeps included)
worked in teams to see who could build the highest tower with boxes
drawed with chalk
danced around

Christmas fun

Our Christmas party was filled with giggling girls 

with tons of energy and excitement!

Every SuperGirl was able to make it to our end of the year party.

While we waited for everyone to arrive the girls picked out their favorite ornament on my tree as my son Jess requested that I write down their choice for him to review later.

Then they made me a Christmas picture.

We decided to eat at the dining room table by candlelight. I was going to switch up our usual menu of pizza but when I mentioned making something different, I was reminded that all of the girls love pizza so why change it? Good point.

While Peyton cleaned up the table and switched it over to our craft table, the girls and I gathered in the tv room and we talked a little about the Christmas story and then we watched a really cute video with kids from New Zealand acting it out. 

They thought the little kids dressed as sheep were adorable. I had to clarify that the little girl who played Mary had a pillow stuffed in her shirt and she really didn’t have a baby.

Our craft was to decorate a cigar box. I told them they should think through what they chose to put on the box and really take some time with it as they could keep it for a really long time. 

They could put things like jewelry, or special pictures or letters in there.

I envisioned boxes completely covered in papers and pictures. 

That isn’t quite what happened  

(they wanted to dance and open presents)

but they did a great job and each box showed their unique personality. 

They can always add things to it with some craft glue.

Next, the girls drew numbers to pick a gift from under the tree. 

They had fun opening it and were so good about saying thank you and telling the others that they really liked their gift.

Peyton and I gave them their SuperGirls necklaces. 

They were especially made by Mrs. Coughlan, a first grade teacher at Deerwood. 

We picked a different colored bead for each girl, although pink is always the most popular.

It wouldn't be a SuperGirls party without some dancing!

Time for ice cream and cookies!

And, then it was time to gather up all of their goodies and get ready to head home.

I think our next party will be on Valentine’s Day.
