Week 2 Feelings and Communication

Our second week of  SuperGirls was a lot of fun.
I was happy to have Peyton there to co-lead!

Most importantly (not really) was that I'd happened to find a pair of pink jeans on sale for $10 and couldn't pass them up considering the girls are always pointing out that I wear only black and grey.
So, here I am with the SuperGirls who were wearing pink that day.

Moving on, we got right to our craft which was making the ever popular shrinky dinks.

I had printed off a few stencils although some girls created their own designs.

Creativity flows when the girls are at the craft table!

Watching them magically shrink

This took a bit of time so we decided to break for a snack.
While munching, I asked the girls if they'd ever said anything and knew right when it came out of their mouth that they wanted to take it back.
I think every one of them answered yes and also had a story about a fight they'd had with a sibling or even something they said to their mom.

Our lesson for the day was going to be about our feelings. We can't help when certain feelings pop up and it is okay to have them no matter what they are.
However, the times we are mad, frustrated, jealous, sad or embarrassed we ARE able to take a breath, think for a moment and respond appropriately.
They then had the task of really bringing home this point by getting into teams of three and role playing what the fast, non-thoughtful reaction might be and then showing us what the appropriate reaction would be.

Peyton helping Vivienne with an idea

They each had a different scenario. Two examples were:

1) You and your friend both try out for a part in the play and your friend gets it. When she tells you her good news you feel jealous.

2) You are learning new problems in math class and you are having a hard time understanding it all. No one else seems to be struggling. You feel frustrated and a little embarrassed.

After the girls had some time to figure out their "script", they performed for the group. They had really great ideas! Peyton and Lily gave them a few hints but they really grasped what the task was about.

I think everyone would agree that Aspen would get the Oscar for her performance. Very entertaining.

Onto our team building activity which also was related to communication, being a good listener and using your words carefully.

The girls were put in teams of two. One was blindfolded. The other had to lead her team mate through a small obstacle course without touching her. She had to give very clear directions.
The blindfolded one had to listen very carefully and follow the directions to get through the course quickly.

We made it really tough by letting the other girls who were watching be the "distractors".
They could yell things like:

don't go that way!
go right! no left!
duck!
stop, you're going to run into a tree!

All of them really did a great job. Of course at first they weren't as specific with what they said and the girls were walking in circles. Then they realized they had to say just how many steps to take, when to turn left or right or bend down. It was neat to see them work together. Success!

DANCE BREAK!!!

Time was flying by as usual so we had some free play. Some girls wanted to put on costumes and pose, some played hide and seek and some drew with chalk.
Side note on the dancing...I've put together a play list of kid friendly appropriate songs which includes Taylor Swift and One Direction by request. I told the girls that when I was in 4th grade me and my bff did a choreographed dance to
"It's Still Rock-n-roll to Me" by Billy Joel. They don't think it's a cool song...yet.

Have a great 4th of July!
